Your Cat's Water Bowl

As I said in my last post, I've been doing a lot of cat sitting lately. Besides the litter box issue, I wanted to talk about the location and size of your cat's water bowl.

Most cats prefer their water bowl in a location other than next to their food. They don't want to drink water that is near the scent of food. Those divided bowls are convenient but not beneficial. Food can get thrown into the water, so it might be wise to put kitty's water bowl somewhere else that's easy for her to get to.

Here are a few pointers:

  • Choose a neutral place to place water, away from food

  • Put more than one bowl of water out for kitty

  • Clean the bowls each day with a mild detergent to wash away bacteria, rinse well

  • Don't just rinse the water bowls

  • Use fresh water daily

  • Keep the water at a consistent level

  • Use a bowl that's wide enough not to squish kitty's whiskers

  • If your cat likes to drink out of the faucet consider a water fountain

  • Add an ice cube to the water on a hot day, just for fun!
